Central Aspects of Positive Leadership

In this first issue I wanted to immediately ignore my guidelines and set down what I view as the central aspects of Positive Leadership.

LEADERSHIP

Aspect: Leadership is a skill or act, not a job title.
Implication: People vary from moment to moment in their leadership abilities and, thus, all people have the ability to grow as leaders. The terms Leaders and Followers refer to people's actions, NOT their roles

Aspect: Leadership is a relationship.
Implication: Leaders need Followers and Followers need Leaders.

Aspect: Leaders and Followers enter into a partnership of mutual trust and accountability.
Implication: Actions that support this partnership, build Positive Leaders/Followers. Actions that degrade this partnership may result in negative relationships and behaviours.

Aspect: Positive Leadership focuses on strengths, positive thoughts, emotions and behaviours that develop ALL people in the organization.
Implication: The positive focus can bring about a cultural shift in managers, teams and organizations.

WORK

Aspect: Work is inherently meaningful.
Implication: People can discover satisfaction and meaning in any task or job.

Aspect: People deserve respect and dignity at work and in their daily life.
Implication: Respect and dignity are basic tenets to all positive relationships, including those in organizations.

Aspect: A healthy, thriving, adaptive workplace is better able to meet organizational goals, regardless of the goals selected.
Implication: Positive organizations have the resources to achieve goals, increasing positive goals (e.g., profit, market share, customer focus) and reducing negative behaviour (e.g., turnover; sabotage; bullying).

SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY

Aspect: Theory provides a framework to understand complex issues.
Implication: Theories should direct attention to key areas.

Aspect: Research is an important method to test theories and fine-tune ideas and interventions.
Implication: Research helps to distinguish fads from good practice.

Aspect: Creative and intuitive leaps are part of the scientific method.
Implication: Creativity and exploration are part of moving forward in understanding Positive Leadership.
